New Brunswick's finance minister has announced he will deliver the Liberal government's first spring budget on March 31.

Roger Melanson says the budget will contain some steps to address a structural deficit that runs about $400 million per year.

The net debt for this fiscal year is projected to increase by $377 million, bringing the total net debt to more than $12 billion.

The Liberals campaigned on spending plans that include $600 million over six years for improvements on infrastructure including roads and bridges.

The government is conducting a strategic program review in an effort to find ways to cut spending and boost revenues.

Melanson has said the results of that review will impact his government's second budget, a year from this spring.
