Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro is warning customers on the island there could be some brief power interruptions over the next several days as it works to bring a new combustion turbine online.

The company says it has begun the process of connecting the turbine plant to the grid in Holyrood.

The utility says there may be some short-term interruptions, but in the event of an outage, power will be restored as soon as possible using existing generation reserves.

Hydro says over the past several days, it has completed numerous start-ups of the turbine plant and will be testing its capacity over the next 10 days.

The utility's parent company, Nalcor Energy, has been working to improve its equipment since unusually cold weather last January along with high winds and system malfunctions led to power outages across the island of Newfoundland, leaving 190,000 customers without power at one point.
