A Newfoundland man accused of first-degree murder in a St. John's bar shooting has pleaded not guilty.

Brandon Phillips, 28, is accused of killing 63-year-old Larry Wellman.

Wellman was a former firefighter who tried to intervene during an alleged robbery at the Captain's Quarters Hotel and Bar on Oct. 3, 2015.

Crown attorneys from Nova Scotia are prosecuting the case to avoid any appearance of conflict of interest.

Premier Dwight Ball has publicly acknowledged his daughter, Jade Ball, was in a relationship with Phillips in recent years that has ended.

Phillips will stand trial in provincial Supreme Court starting Nov. 6, 2017.
