Police have confirmed that remains found near a lake in central Newfoundland are those of a man reported missing in 2006.

They say the remains were discovered near Gander Lake on May 19.

They are not revealing the identity of the man, saying only that he was reported missing in the area in December 2006.

RCMP in Gander and the office of the chief medical examiner have ruled out foul play.

Police say they have notified the man's family.
