The RCMP have identified the 51-year-old man who died after being shot by Bathurst police in northern New Brunswick earlier this week.

The Mounties, who are investigating the shooting, say Michel Vienneau of Tracadie-Sheila died after being fatally wounded by a police officer from the municipal force.

It occurred Monday at about 11:30 a.m. near the city's train station.

RCMP Sgt. Alain LeBlanc said officers involved have been assigned administrative duties while the investigation into the shooting is underway.

The man was pronounced dead at Chaleur Regional Hospital in Bathurst shortly after the shooting.

Bathurst police say it occurred as officers were involved in an ongoing investigation but few other details have been released.

LeBlanc declined to say whether the investigation's findings will be made public, instead saying an update will be provided once it is complete.

He said 10 RCMP officers are involved in the investigation.
