A new school in New Brunswick has been named in honour of a Canadian submariner who died following a fire on board HMCS Chicoutimi.
Provincial officials, students and staff held a ceremony Wednesday to open the Chris Saunders Memorial School in Quispamsis.
The $13-million building can accommodate 350 students from kindergarten to Grade 5.
The two-storey, 5,460 square-metre school has four kindergarten and 14 general classrooms, student work areas, music and performing arts classrooms and a double gymnasium.
Saunders, who was a member of the Royal Canadian Navy, was killed in 2004 when a fire broke out on Chicoutimi.
The 32-year-old lieutenant was born in the province and went to school outside Saint John.
