Police in Nova Scotia say a man from the United States who was staying at a hotel in Cape Breton has been seriously injured in a hit-and-run collision.

RCMP say the 65-year-old man was crossing Highway 4 in Port Hastings near the hotel he was staying when he was hit around 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Police say the driver left the victim in the middle of the road and drove away, continuing east towards Port Hawkesbury.

The man, from North Carolina, was taken to a nearby hospital and was later airlifted to a hospital in Halifax with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The Mounties are searching for a grey Honda that's missing its driver's side mirror.
