Police in Victoria have issued a warning to cyclists after someone strung fishing line across a bike route near the city's downtown.

A woman called 911 to report she'd removed the fishing line that could have endangered cyclists who wouldn't be able to see it.

Police say the caller wished to remain anonymous but they're asking her to phone back so they can gather further information as part of their investigation.

The incident is similar to another four blocks away in August 2013 when a cyclist was injured after black electrical tape was strung across a road.

No arrests were made in that case.

Police say it's unclear if the two incidents are related but that cyclists riding in the area should ensure they're wearing proper helmets and lights.
