The government of Antigua has signed a $255 million deal with a Chinese company to renovate the island's main port and harbour.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne said Tuesday that China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation will modernize St. John's port and harbour. The company previously built other structures in Antigua, including a stadium and new airport terminal.

The government is seeking a loan from a Chinese bank for the project.

Nearly 377,000 cruise ship passengers visited Antigua this year through October, a 7 per cent drop compared to the same period last year.
