Brazil's attorney general is batting down efforts to quash his investigation into a top political figure caught up in a wide-ranging kickback inquiry at the state-run oil company Petrobras.
Rodrigo Janot has asked the Supreme Court not to suspend an inquiry into Lower House speaker Eduardo Cunha, saying that a key prosecution witness has offered details of bribe payments allegedly made to the lawmaker. Janot's office said on Tuesday that he sent a document to the top court late last week defending his probe.
Cunha is one of the highest profile politicians implicated in the scandal. He has denied any involvement.
The Supreme Court oversees investigations of legislators and top executive officials under Brazilian law.
