Five things to watch this week in Canadian business:

Insurance Conference: The Risk and Insurance Management Society Canada Council holds a four-day conference in Calgary beginning Sunday. Rising insurance claims that are the result of natural disasters such as floods and forest fires are bound to come up as a topic of conversation.

Securities Hearing into Amaya: A tribunal with Quebec's securities regulator begins hearings Monday in the Amaya insider trading case. Thirteen people are alleged to have used their access to information to rake in nearly $1.5 million in profit over five years. They haven't been charged but have been ordered not to trade shares or gain access to proceeds from their activities.

Rogers CEO Speech: Guy Laurence, president and CEO of Rogers Communications, speaks Wednesday before the Canadian Club of Canada in Toronto. The company, among other big TV service providers, has faced criticism for the rollout of its so-called "skinny basic" television packages. Last week during CRTC hearings, Rogers said it's adapting its marketing practices in response.

Real Estate: Another batch of real estate data is expected to come out Thursday when the Canadian Real Estate Association reports home sales figures for August. Property sales have been down nationally for three consecutive months. And the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver reported last week that sales were down 26 per cent in August compared to the same month last year.

Empire Annual Meeting: Empire, the parent company of grocer Sobeys, will report its first-quarter earnings and hold its annual meeting Thursday in Stellarton, N.S., where it's headquartered. Two months ago, Empire CEO Marc Poulin left abruptly, after a turbulent fiscal year that saw more than $2 billion in net losses.
