The Standard & Poor's 500 index climbed to a record high Friday as the energy sector continued to rebound with the climbing price of oil. Some encouraging earnings news from major companies also bolstered stocks. The Dow Jones industrial average remains 35 points short of its all-time high.

On Friday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 46.97, or 0.3 per cent, to 18,019.35.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 8.51 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 2,096.99.

The Nasdaq composite climbed 36.22, or 0.8 per cent, to 4,893.84.

For the week:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 195.06 points, or 1.1 per cent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 41.52 points, or 2 per cent.

The Nasdaq composite rose 149.44 points, or 3.2 per cent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 196.28 points, or 1.1 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is up 38.09 points, or 1.9 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 157.78 points, or 3.3 per cent.
