U.S. stocks closed out a turbulent week with a solid gain on Friday as investors welcomed good news on the U.S. economy. Nike soared 12 per cent, the most in the Dow, after reporting higher earnings.
The Dow Jones industrial average surged 167.35 points, or 1 per cent, to close at 17,113.15.
The S&P 500 index rose 16.86 points, or 0.9 per cent, to 1,982.85.
The Nasdaq composite climbed 45.45 points, or 1 per cent, to 4,512.19.
For the week:
The Dow fell 166.59 points, or 1 per cent.
The S&P 500 fell 27.55 points, or 1.4 per cent.
The Nasdaq composite fell 67.60 points, or 1.5 per cent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 536.49 points, or 3.2 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is up 134.49 points, or 7.3 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 335.60 points, or 8 per cent.
