Stocks closed slightly higher on Monday, putting the U.S. market close to a record high. The market climbed as investors assessed some good corporate earnings. There was also some encouraging news on the economy, a report that showed U.S. factory orders rose in March for the first time since July.
On Monday:
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 46.34 points, or 0.3 per cent, to close at 18,070.40.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 6.20 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 2,114.49.
The Nasdaq increased 11.54 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 5,016.93.
For the year:
The Dow is up 247.33 points, or 1.4 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is up 55.59 points, or 2.7 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 280.87 points, or 5.9 per cent.
