U.S. stocks dropped on Monday as energy companies slid along with the price of oil. Crude fell to the lowest level since March on signs that supplies remained ample as demand was expected to weaken.

For the day:

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 91.66 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 17,598.20.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 5.80 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 2,098.04.

The Nasdaq composite dropped 12.90 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 5,115.38.

For the year:

The Dow is down 224.87 points, or 1.3 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is up 39.14 points, or 1.9 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 379.33 points, or 8 per cent.
