Positive earnings news helped nudge stocks higher on Thursday, breaking a two-day losing streak. Supermarket operator Kroger jumped after reporting income that was ahead of what analysts were expecting. Costco also rose after its earnings beat estimates.

On Thursday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 38.82 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 18,135.72.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 2.51 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 2,101.04.

The Nasdaq composite lost 15.67 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 4,982.81.

For the week:

The Dow is up 3.02 points, or 0.02 per cent.

The S&P 500 is down 3.46 points, or 0.2 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 19.28 points, or 0.07 per cent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 312.65 points, or 1.8 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is up 42.14 points, or 2.1 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 246.75 points, or 5.2 per cent
