Stocks rose moderately Thursday in relatively quiet trading, a contrast to the heavy selling that occurred a day earlier when Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen suggested that stock prices might be too high.

On Thursday:

The Dow Jones industrial average added 82.08 points, or 0.5 per cent, to 17,924.06.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 7.85 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 2,088.

The Nasdaq composite declined 25.90 points, or 0.5 per cent, to 4,945.54.

For the week:

The Dow is down 100 points, or 0.6 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is down 20.29 points, or 1 per cent.

The Nasdaq is down 59.85 points, or 1.2 per cent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 100.99 points, or 0.6 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is up 29.10 points, or 1.4 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 209.49 points, or 4.4 per cent.
