U.S. stocks closed higher on Thursday, propelling the Nasdaq composite index to an all-time high.

It was the best day for stocks in a week and came a day after the Federal Reserve said that it needed to see more improvement in the economy before raising its benchmark interest rate.

For the day:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 180.10 points, or 1 per cent, to 18,115.84.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 20.80 points, or 1 per cent, to 2,121.24.

The Nasdaq added 68.07 points, or 1.3 per cent, to 5,132.95.

For the week:

The Dow is up 217 points, or 1.2 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is up 27.13 points, or 1.3 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 81.85 points, or 1.6 per cent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 292.77 points, or 1.6 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is up 62.34 points, or 3 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 396.89 points, or 8.4 per cent.
