U.S. stocks rose Tuesday, delivering the latest record highs for the Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 index.
Investors were encouraged by a positive outlook from homebuilders and better news from Japan and Germany. Health care stocks had some of the biggest gains, while the energy sector lagged the rest of the market as the price of oil resumed its slide.
On Tuesday:
The Dow Jones industrial average gained 40.07 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 17,687.82.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 10.48 points, or 0.5 per cent, to close at 2,051.80.
The Nasdaq composite climbed 31.44 points, or 0.7 per cent, to 4,702.44.
For the week:
The Dow is up 53.08 points, or 0.3 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is up 11.98 points, or 0.6 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 13.90 points, or 0.3 per cent
For the year:
The Dow is up 1,111.16 points, or 6.7 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is up 203.44 points, or 11 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 525.85 points, or 12.6 per cent.
