U.S. stocks surged on Tuesday, bouncing back from a big drop last week, as the market's recent bout of volatility continued. Investors were encouraged by a late rebound in China's stock market.
For the day:
The Dow rose 390.30 points, or 2.4 per cent, to 16,492.68.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 48.19 points, or 2.5 per cent, to 1,969.41.
The Nasdaq composite rose 128.01 points, or 2.7 per cent, to 4,811.93.
For the year:
The Dow is down 1,330.39 points, or 7.5 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is down 89.49 points, or 4.4 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 75.87 points, or 1.6 per cent.
