Another weakening of China's currency sent U.S. markets sharply lower Wednesday, but by the end of the day major indexes recovered nearly all the ground they had lost earlier. The Dow Jones industrial average had been down as much as 277 points.
For the day:
The Dow Jones industrial average lost 0.33 point, less than 0.1 per cent, to 17,402.51.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 1.98 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 2,086.05.
The Nasdaq composite climbed 7.60 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 5,044.39.
For the week:
The Dow is up 29.13 points, or 0.2 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is up 8.48 points, or 0.4 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 0.84 points, or 0.02 per cent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 420.56 points, or 2.4 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is up 27.15 points, or 1.3 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 308.33 points, or 6.5 per cent.
