Energy companies lead the U.S. stock market to a higher close on Tuesday. General Motors rose after reporting stronger sales, and Biogen, a biotech company, soared following news that its drug for Alzheimer's disease showed promise.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 102.75 points, or 0.6 per cent, to 17,879.55.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 13.11 points, or 0.6 per cent, to 2,066.55.

The Nasdaq composite rose 28.46 points, or 0.6 per cent, to 4,755.81.

For the week:

The Dow is up 51.31, or 0.3 per cent.

The S&P 500 is down 1.01, or less than 0.1 per cent.

The Nasdaq is down 35.82, or 0.8 per cent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 1,302.89 points, or 7.9 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is up 218.19 points, or 11.8 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 579.22 points, or 13.9 per cent.
