Another attempt will be made next month to create what is being touted as the largest credit union in Manitoba and the sixth largest in Canada.
Members of the Assiniboine and Access credit unions will cast ballots in a second vote on whether the financial institutions should merge.
The first attempt on April 22 saw Assiniboine members vote 95 per cent in favour, but the vote by Access members fell just short of the 66.7 per cent margin needed to pass the resolution.
Access says in a release that the results surprised many of its members, who immediately called on their board to try again.
The question will be put to Access members on Sept. 16 and those with Assiniboine five days later.
Nearly 155,000 members from both credit unions are eligible to cast ballots.
Assiniboine has 20 branches in Winnipeg, while Access has outlets in the communities of Winkler, Altona, Carman, Vita, Oak Bluff and Miami. (CJOB, The Canadian Press)
