Forty-six workers at a Mosaic Co. potash mine in Saskatchewan are out of a job.
Mosaic spokeswoman Sarah Fedorchuk says layoffs at the Colonsay mine are necessary because potash supply is outstripping demand.
Fedorchuk says the company offered early retirement to some employees, but it wasn't enough, so the company had to issue pink slips.
She also says the layoffs are permanent because Mosaic isn't planning to ramp up production.
Mosaic Co. announced in September that it would cut down production at its Colonsay potash mine in Saskatchewan.
At the time, the company said the move was primarily because of delayed fertilizer purchases in Brazil and North America.
