The Toronto Stock Exchange and Canadian dollar are showing modest losses in morning trading today.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 22.39 points at 14,561.03, nearly two hours after the opening bell.

It was a different picture south of the border, where U.S. indexes were up slightly.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 23.12 points to 17,953.79 and the S&P 500 rose 6.56 points to 2,095.22.

The Nasdaq composite was up 16.39 points at 5,074.79.

The loonie was at 74.60 cents US, down 0.12 of a cent from Thursday's close.

The December crude contract fell 26 cents per share to US$44.40 per barrel and December natural gas added two cents to US$2.78 per mmBTU.

December gold lost 20 cents to US$1,303.10 an ounce and December copper contracts were up a penny to US$2.26 a pound.
