A late tick higher was enough to set another record high for the U.S. stock market.
Indexes had languished for much of the day Tuesday as investors worried that Greece wouldn't reach an agreement with its creditors. News that a compromise could be in the works helped send indexes marginally higher in the afternoon.
The Standard and Poor's 500 gained three points, or 0.2 per cent, to 2,100, beating its record from Friday. U.S. markets were closed Monday for Presidents Day.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 28 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 18,047. The Nasdaq rose five points, or 0.1 per cent, to 4,899.
Goodyear Tire & Rubber rose 3 per cent after reporting a jump in profit.
Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.14 per cent.
