Graphic designer Angela Grauerholz of Montreal has won this year's $50,000 Scotiabank Photography Award.
Jury member Robert Bean said her "explorations of the materiality and contexts of images have renewed our aesthetic and cultural understanding of photographs."
Born in Hamburg, Germany, Grauerholz is co-founder of Artexte, an archive for Canadian art in Montreal.
She also teaches at the Ecole de design, Universite du Quebec a Montreal.
Her honours include a Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts.
Grauerholz beat two other contenders for the fifth annual honour.
Founded by Edward Burtynsky and Jane Nokes, the award honours an artist in mid-career.
