Crown prosecutors want an adult sentence for a Winnipeg teen who fatally stabbed a boy in a gang-motivated attack.

The youth was 14 when he stabbed and slashed 15-year-old Clark Stevenson in 2011.

He was also convicted of aggravated assault in a separate stabbing about a month before the attack on Stevenson.

Crown prosecutor Carla Dewar says these two attacks, combined with his conduct in prison after his arrest point to the need for an adult sentence.

Dewar said Tuesday during a sentencing hearing that the teen has been involved in numerous incidents, including assaults, attempts to recruit gang members, inciting violence and causing disruptions with other inmates.

The youth, now 17, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in Stevenson's death and has spent just over two years in prison, but Dewar says he should serve another five.

Stevenson's mother said in her victim impact statement that her family has fallen apart since the death of her son, who was the youngest of seven siblings.

A decision on sentencing is expected at a later date.
