One person is dead after an overnight house fire in Winnipeg.

Firefighters say flames and smoke were coming from the southwest-area home when they arrived at the scene around 2:00 a.m.

Emergency officials say the male victim was found inside the building after the blaze was quickly doused.

He was in critical condition when he was taken to hospital, where he died.

The person's age wasn't immediately known.

The arson unit is investigating.
