An investigation is underway into a fight between two men that resulted in a serious injury after an off-duty Winnipeg police officer intervened.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba says it was notified by the police service that an off-duty officer was driving on Friday when he saw two men chasing each other in and out of traffic.

The officer intervened and one of the men suffered a fractured jaw.

The man was treated and released from hospital, then detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

The Independent Investigation Unit looks into all serious incidents involving police officers on or off duty.

It is asking any witnesses or anyone with information or video footage of what happened to come forward.
