Police say a 25-year-old man from Saskatoon who was beaten with a pool cue in a Manitoba bowling alley has died in hospital where he had been on life support.

Officers were called to the Valley Bowling Lanes in Winkler on Saturday night because two men were fighting over an unpaid debt.

Police say the men knew each other.

One of the men was struck several times with the pool cue and was left unconscious.

A witness followed a suspect to a convenience store and called police, who arrested a man within minutes of the attack.

Justin Leslie Bird, who is 29 and also from Saskatchewan, is in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
