The Correctional Service of Canada says a 64-year-old convicted murderer has been found dead at the minimum-security unit of Stony Mountain Institution.

Staff performed CPR on Dennis Barry McFadden and emergency services were called, but he could not be resuscitated.

McFadden had been serving an indeterminate sentence for first-degree murder since June 4, 1982.

According to appeal court documents from British Columbia, McFadden was convicted in the 1979 death of Marion MacKay, for whom he was doing work as a plumber in Saanich, B.C.

McFadden did not deny killing MacKay, saying she had been shouting at him about the cost of repair for a window he had broken.

Her naked body, which sustained 26 knife wounds, was found wrapped up in a tarp and hidden in a boat owned by McFadden.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the police and the coroner have been notified, and Correctional Service Canada will review the circumstances of the incident.
