Wildlife officers have busted an illegal elk meat ring in southern Manitoba after a lengthy investigation.

Manitoba Conservation says undercover officers were sold poached meat by a man at a Hutterite colony south of Portage la Prairie.

Investigators linked him to an alleged supplier, who had two elk carcasses in his truck when he was pulled over by the RCMP.

The man who sold the meat pleaded guilty to five counts under the Wildlife Act.

Brian Hofer was fined $10,000 and banned from hunting for two years.

The alleged supplier is still under investigation.
