Three RCMP officers have been cleared of any wrongdoing after a man suffered serious injuries during an arrest in a western Manitoba town.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba says the officers had sufficient grounds to take the man into custody in Swan River last December, and that force was necessary to protect them.

The unit says the man tried to grab an officer's gun during a struggle to handcuff him, prompting the Mounties to restrain and control him.

The man suffered abdominal bleeding from blunt force trauma.

He also had a bruised right eye and a liver laceration.

The suspect was charged with two Criminal Code offences and one count under the Controlled Drug and Substances Act. (CJOB)
