The captain of the Chicago Blackhawks is giving back in record-setting fashion to his home town of Winnipeg.
Jonathan Toews has donated $1 million to a campaign to build a new fieldhouse at the city's Dakota Community Centre, the place where he learned to play hockey.
He will also act as the fundraising project's honorary chairman.
The donation from the Jonathan Toews Foundation is reportedly the largest-ever private donation to a community centre in Manitoba.
Toews says the community centre played "a pivotal role" in his career, adding his parents instilled in him the importance of giving back.
Tom Thiessen, chairman of the Dakota Community Centre's board of directors, says Toews' generosity reinforces their belief in the importance of access to wellness, recreation and sport programs as key to a healthy community.
