Winnipeg police say an 89-year-old woman named Dorothy Dykens has been identified as the victim of a fatal stabbing in St. Boniface on the weekend.
Dykens' neighbour, Melissa Joyce Gabriel, 35, has been charged with manslaughter and with injuring an animal.
Police allege Gabriel entered Dykens' home late Saturday or early Sunday and stabbed her multiple times before returning home and attacking a 16-year-old Chihuahua.
Police also allege they got a call from Gabriel early Sunday and found her at her home, drunk, which prompted them to canvass the area.
That's when they found Dykens' body.
The injured animal was taken to a veterinary hospital, where it is recovering after surgery.
