A 27-year-old Winnipeg man has been sentenced to 10 years for manslaughter in a case of mistaken identity.

Court was told Jordan Charney was having a party in December 2011 at an apartment building.

However, the mood quickly changed when his brother's girlfriend told Charney someone was kicking on apartment doors.

Thinking it was a gang threat, Charney and a friend went to investigate and saw the victim, Sheldon Kostenko, sitting alone in an apartment.

The pair thought Kostenko was an intruder, but he was actually visiting his friend, the caretaker of the building.

The caretaker went to the bar with another friend and didn't take Kostenko because he was too intoxicated.

Before the victim could explain, Charney started punching Kostenko and his friend stabbed the man eight times.
