A woman who was one of five people in a van fleeing from police died when the vehicle collided with a pickup truck in a residential Winnipeg neighbourhood.

Winnipeg police say the other occupants of the van — another woman, two men and a 17-year-old boy — were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The lone male occupant of the pickup truck was also transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Both vehicles rolled over onto their sides.

Const. Robert Carver says the incident started when a general patrol unit decided to initiate a traffic stop.

He says as soon as the officer turned on his siren, the van sped up and took off.

Police say the officer did not launch a pursuit of the vehicle.
