A 15-year-old girl whose car hit a semi-truck, killing two passengers on the Alaska Highway in Whitehorse, has been charged.

RCMP said the driver faces two counts of criminal negligence causing death and one count of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

She is scheduled to appear in youth court at a later date, Whitehorse RCMP Insp. Archie Thompson said Thursday.

The driver's name cannot be published because of her age.

The collision at 3 a.m. on Aug. 9, 2014 killed 15-year-old Clare Cherepak and 20-year-old Brendan Kinney.

Kinney, who was sitting in the front passenger's seat, was found dead at the scene by emergency responders. Cherepak died in hospital.

Eighteen-year-old Derrick Gibbons was medevaced to Vancouver in serious but stable condition. He spent weeks in hospital.

The 15-year-old driver was treated and released the same day.

The truck driver was not injured.
