Police in the Yukon have recovered the body of a man who jumped into the Pelly River to go for a swim.

Richard Hager's remains were found one kilometre downstream from a bridge that he jumped from on the evening of July 19.

The 21-year-old member of the Selkirk First Nation is believed to have drowned, said RCMP from the Pelly Crossing detachment.

"The preliminary investigation is consistent with witness reports that Mr. Hager struggled while trying to swim to shore after jumping off the Pelly River Bridge," a police statement said.

Hager was with a friend when he took off his shoes and hat and said he wanted to cool off from the heat.

The search-and-rescue mission involved several RCMP detachments, volunteers, the Fisheries Department and the Selkirk First Nation.

The Yukon Coroner's Service will continue with its investigation with assistance from the RCMP.
