A man has died in Nunavut after Mounties say they responded to a report of a suicidal man with a gun.
RCMP say in a news release that the detachment in Pond Inlet was called about a man with a firearm at the local cemetery on Saturday afternoon.
They say police attempted to de-escalate the situation but the 20-year-old suffered a gunshot wound.
He was taken to the local health centre but died several hours later.
RCMP say that to ensure transparency, they've handed the investigation over to the Ottawa Police Service.
The news release doesn't say whether police officers fired their weapons, and RCMP say they aren't commenting further on the investigation.
