Yukon firefighters are flying stateside to help colleagues battle wildfires in Idaho and Oregon.

Sarah Murray of Yukon Community Service says 30 firefighters and three senior staff are scheduled to leave Saturday.

She says no fires are currently burning in Idaho, but extreme fire danger is forecast for this weekend.

Murray says two fire officials will head to the Cable Crossing fire west of Glide, Ore., which is "currently very active with extreme fire behaviour and possibility of new starts."

A Yukon government website says 182 fires have burned more than 1,700 square kilometres of forest this year, and 108 of those fires are still active, meaning they have yet to be declared out.

Murray says the territory employs 66 firefighters and managers in 22 three-member initial-attack crews.

The firefighters can be called back within 24 hours if required, but the territory says cooler temperatures and precipitation have reduced the fire-danger rating to low and moderate.

The Yukon's wildfire risk has dropped since a hot, busy period in May and June.

At that time, 72 firefighters from Ontario came to the territory for two weeks to battle blazes.

As well, 50 from British Columbia and Alberta fought Yukon fires in June. (Whitehorse Star)
