Seventeen horses have died in a barn fire north of Owen Sound.

The blaze broke out on Thursday evening in a large older barn near Clavering in Georgian Bluffs.

Intertownship Fire Chief Carl Linthorne says the fire was spotted by the farm owner who was plowing his driveway.

Two of the horses who died in the fire were quarter horses while 15 were mini horses.

The 48 year old owner of the farm was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, where he was treated and released.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation but authorities say it is not considered suspicious.

The fire is estimated to have resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. (CFOS)
