Ontario's police watchdog has been called in to investigate after a 34-year-old man was shot by police responding to an armed holdup in downtown Toronto.

The incident happened at about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday (in the area of Sherbourne Street and Bloor Street East).

Police say officers who were called to a convenience store for reports of a holdup arrived to find the suspect had already fled.

Insp. Robert Johnson says a man matching the suspect's description was then found inside a pharmacy around the corner.

The Special Investigations Unit says there was an interaction between police and a man inside the pharmacy, and that the man suffered gunshot wounds to his abdomen and leg.

Paramedics say the man was in critical condition when he was taken to hospital.

The SIU is called in to investigate incidents involving police where there has been serious injury or death.
