A 33-year-old Belleville woman is facing charges following a six-month investigation into what police are calling a case of elder abuse.

The investigation began earlier this year after police say they got a complaint from a family member about alleged suspicious financial transactions.

It's alleged a female suspect who held power of attorney for property for her elderly parents used her position to misappropriate more than $10,000.

It's also alleged the suspect made a number of purchases deemed to be a breach of the fiduciary duties of someone acting in the power of attorney capacity.

A woman — whose name wasn't released to protect the identify of the victims — was arrested Tuesday and charged with theft by power of attorney, fraud over $5,000 and breach of trust.

She was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Belleville Provincial Court on Nov. 13.

The elderly couple has since been placed in a long-term care facility, and the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee has assumed control of their financial well-being.
