A 17-year-old Brantford youth remains in hospital after being rescued from a near-drowning in Lake Erie.

Provincial police say the teen was swimming with his friends at Long Point Beach in Norfolk County on Tuesday afternoon when high winds started to churn up the surf.

They say the teen and his friends began making their way back to shore, but the victim slipped under the powerful waves.

When he resurfaced about three minutes later, he was unconscious with vital signs absent.

OPP Const. Ed Sanchuck says two off-duty nurses started CPR and were able to get the teen's heart started before paramedics arrived.

Police have not released the teen's name and there is no immediate word on his condition.
