Police say a woman is dead after a fire broke out at a seniors' residence in Newmarket.
They say the woman lived in the apartment where the fire started, and was in her 70s.
York Region Police say they were called to the scene of the fire shortly after noon Sunday.
Police say the building was evacuated, and buses were brought in to shelter residents who were cleared out of the building.
A statement from the Regional Municipality of York says four people were sent to hospital and treated for minor smoke inhalation.
The statement says most residents have returned to their apartments.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
