Heavy rain overnight has led to some localized flooding and road closures throughout southern Ontario, with more rain and high winds in the forecast for Monday.

In Toronto, one lane of the southbound Don Valley Parkway was closed for about five hours due to flooding but the busy route reopened just before 6 a.m.

And police are advising of ponding on the northbound Highway 400 north of Highway 88 in Bradford, southeast of Barrie.

Meanwhile, Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for many areas of southern Ontario, warning that while very mild air is making a brief visit, the weather will become windy and turn colder again by Tuesday.

The agency says a sharp Arctic cold front will blast east across the region later Monday with strong and gusty southwesterly winds, while gusts of 80 kilometres an hour will be common over southern Ontario and in eastern Ontario near the north shore of Lake Ontario.

Niagara is under a wind warning, with gusts of up to 100 kilometres per hour expected.

The weather agency says those winds will be strong enough to cause some tree damage, and warns power outages are also possible.

It warns the winds could also cause difficult driving conditions, especially on highways exposed to strong cross winds.

Snow squalls are possible over areas east of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay on Tuesday.
