A 26-year-old man is facing a murder charge in connection with a fatal assault on an elder in a Manitoulin Island First Nation.
Provincial police say 70-year-old John Panamick — an elder with the M'Chigeeng First Nation — was assaulted inside his residence on May 11 between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m.
Panamick was discovered later that night by a neighbour who contacted paramedics.
He was transported to hospital, where he died of his injuries on June 13.
Police say an investigation has deemed the incident to be a homicide and a suspect was arrested on Thursday.
Kimel Corbiere of the Township of Central Manitoulin is charged with one count of first-degree murder.
