Police say a 58-year-old man is facing charges that he allegedly impersonated a police officer in a city north of Toronto.

Investigators say that on Friday afternoon, a man in a car got the attention of a woman who was driving in Vaughan.

Police say he was wearing what appeared to be a police jacket, identified himself as an officer and threatened to give her a $500 ticket for texting and driving.

A plainclothes officer patrolling the area witnessed the incident and thought it suspicious so he talked to the woman to determine what had taken place.

Investigators say 58-year-old Steven Boan of Vaughan is charged with personating a police officer and is to appear in court Feb. 11 in Newmarket, Ont.

Anyone who has experienced a similar situation is asked to contact York Regional Police.
